17%-20% Rise in Cargo and Vehicle Thefts in 2022

According to a report by CargoNet, thefts involving heavy commercial vehicles and cargo increased by 17% and 20%, respectively, in 2022. The average value of stolen cargo in an event was $214,104, and the total amount of cargo stolen in 2022 was estimated to be $223 million. Increases in theft activity were especially significant around major intermodal hubs, with California and Georgia seeing the highest increase in thefts. Household items, electronics, and green energy components were among the most frequently stolen items. CargoNet warns of the rise in fictitious cargo pickups, which can affect all parties in a supply chain, and recorded a 600% increase in such incidents in 2022 compared to the previous year.
